12/9 Tampa Barbell did well at the Southern States meet. It was very nice to view the sea of black shirts and our lifters hitting PRs. See the news section for highlights. There are a few meets on the horizon. Orlando Barbell, Port Richey, and Gary Franks Nationals meet. If you are a member and you haven't competed in 2007, it is mandatory that you sign up for one of these meets! It's that time of year again. Christmas.. squat gifts for everyone... so i broke out my IPA box and resumed squatting albeit just a tad high. My goal: stay healthy enough to battle Schwanke every 3rd week for the crown. 11/29 Quick update: Southern States is 2 days away. We have 6 going and they all look poised for PRs. Some have come a long way in changing the way they think about training, etc. It’s good to see the team come together to support each other. On the lighter side: two members today who shall remain nameless probably did one of the lamest things ever to happen in our gym. They did curls using the “buddy system”… it was truly fruity to historic proportions. I will chalk it up as a tribute to our departed Blaine and let it go. Otherwise, I may have to puke. I thought I re-popped a tendon off, but I think it’s fine. It's great when you get older and you have so much scar tissue from surgeries that you just can tell anymore if something is only slightly fucked up or seriously wrong. Sorry for the scare guys. 11/10 Believe it or not, 3 people at Tampa Barbell pulled over 700 today, (and someone missed it.. guess which that one was). Gearman did a nice squat then got stuck in his gear for 30 minutes. Good thing he has newbies to boss around or he'd be sleeping in that canvas. Schwanke lost the squat-off by forfeit and ran around the gym pulling max efforts in varying pull movements. He almost did 800 with a very ugly-looking lift that had a slight resemblance to a sumo. BTW: we do not teach new lifters how to perform 'isolation exercises'. you know who you are... now man up and do some fucking rows and maybe you will put on some size. We got a kettlebell (thanks Mike W). 2 more on the way. I'm sure in a year they will be collecting cobwebs, but they look cool. 11/3 Today's highlights: We have 5 people competing at the Southern States in 4 weeks. Most were on a deload this week. We are big on deloads as I believe it's better to go into a meet fresh than with a burnt out CNS. Too bad I can never personally stick to that, but I find it easy to boss others into doing it. I just shut off the lights, A/C, and music early before Gearman gets into his 3rd squat suit of the day. Everyone has a feel for their openers at this point on most lifts. We are just refining our technique with full battle gear and making final preparations. Meet lifters get precedence on our big-daddy monolift, the Sarden. We like to get ready for a meet on the Sarden because the feet are very wide and there are less 'comfort points'. It's better not to go into a meet very dependent on a monolift where you are totally comfortable like the ELITE. Schwanke and I had a battle for speed where we picked 3 judges to judge who had the faster squat. We used 465 + 200 chains on the buffalo bar. I actually went down to my parallel box today instead of using the vag-pads. Unfortunately, I lost. Oh well, he cheats by bouncing. Only I can see it though. ;) |
